Shea oil and shea butter originates from the fruit of a tree that only grows in one area of Africa. The shea tree provides a vital source of income for millions of indigenous women who collect fallen fruit from the wild trees. Although it represents a smaller market (in terms of volume) compared to other commodity oilseeds and nuts, shea’s ...

- How are shea nuts processed?
- Once enough shea nuts have been collected, along with the requisite firewood and water, the most common forms of postharvest processing treatments can begin. This leads to production of dry shea kernels, which are traditionally processed into shea butter or can be traded for industrial processing.
- How does Shea processing produce waste?
- Shea processing generates waste or residue at two levels. First, in the rural areas where fruit gathering occurs, fruit flesh is eaten or thrown away as waste. Shells or husks are also generated when the kernels are produced from the nuts. In the butter production stage, shea residue is generated as a by-product after oil extraction.
- How is shea butter processed?
- Experiments and research reports on the nature of shea processing and its resource consumption show that rural processors use traditional manual processing methods and thus rely heavily on manual and often crude equipment to produce butter. Their counterparts in urban areas use varying degrees of improved shea butter processing technologies.
- Can mechanical Ex pression rig be used for dry extraction of shea butter?
