Aerial view of a forest area with oil palm in SW Cameroon. Photo by Mokhamad Edliadi/CIFOR. Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon.

ial(Best Case Scenario)24 23 5.52 200,0001,104,000In Cameroon, 40% of smallholder farmers own manual artisanal mills (12% OER) an. the rest have semi-motorized artisanal mills (16% OER). Food loss in palm oil at the processing stage is 5-9%. which is due to low extraction rates of artisanal mills. By raising the FFB yield (24 MT/ha) and OER (23 ...

Since 1990, oil palm cultivation, because nibbling large zones in dense forest areas of Cameroon, becomes the main driver of deforestation. It leads to the loss of plant and animal biodiversity as well as engaging soils and water pollution, which raises questions about its sustainability. Nowadays, palm plantations occupy almost 400 000 ha shared between agro-industries, elites and small ...

However, they can broadly be categorized into two groups that correspond to capacity and crude palm oil (CPO) extraction rates: mechanized systems and fully manual, hand mills. In Cameroon, palm oil contributes to nearly 80% of edible oil demand, 30% of which is estimated to come from non-industrial mills (Frank et al., 2011).

This has left a wide research gap in the PO sector of producing countries in Africa like Cameroon, even though they are hotspots for commercial oil palm plantation establishment in recent years. In this study, we set out to assess the negative impacts of PO trade on ES focusing on Cameroon.
- Does clearing forest increase palm oil production in southwest Cameroon?
- We found that 73% of oil palm producers in Southwest Cameroon reported clearing forest to expand cultivation, based on a survey of 546 farms. The magnitude of expansion was explained by differences in palm oil milling strategies and supply chain integration.
- Why is oil palm deforestation a problem in Cameroon?
- By José Sebasti?o Cidreira Vieira, Wilame Silva Castr… Since 1990, oil palm cultivation, because nibbling large zones in dense forest areas of Cameroon, becomes the main driver of deforestation. It leads to the loss of plant and animal biodiversity as well as engaging soils and water pollution, which raises questions about its sustainability.
- What impact does palm oil exploitation have on Cameroon?
- Nowadays, palm plantations occupy almost 400 000 ha shared between agro-industries, elites and small farmers while annual palm oil production increased from 150, 000 tons in 2000 to 413,000 tons in 2018 against a demand that peaked at 1.179 million tons in 2018. This would assess the impacts of the oil palm exploitation in Cameroon.
- How much palm oil is produced in Cameroon?
- Production of palm oil in Cameroon is distributed across three plantation types or scales: ? Agro-industrial plantations (58,860 ha producing 120,000 tons); ? Supervised smallholder plantations (35,000 ha producing 30,000 tons), and ? Independent smallholdings (occupying an estimated 100,000 ha producing approximately 80,000 tons of palm oil4).
