There are two types of methods to extract the oil from the seeds, namely solvent extraction and pressing. Solvent extraction is suitable for the seeds with oil content lower than 20%, such as soybean. Pressing is suitable for the seeds with high oil content, such as rapeseed. However, there is residual oil in the meal by using the pressing method.

Cold pressed rapeseed (Brassica napus) oil/h2>
Therefore, solvent extraction gives an accurate oil content of the samples, by comparing the oil extraction yield from treated and untreated pressed rapeseed. Solvent extraction is the most efficient method with high extraction yield, but this method may cause plant security problems, emissions of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere ...

- How is oil extracted from rapeseed?
- Conventionally, oil extraction from rapeseed is achieved by screw-pressing, either by expeller pressing (full-pressing) or by pre-pressing of the seeds, followed by solvent extraction. Oil contents in the resulting press cakes are in the range of 5?%?10?% (full-press) or 15?%?18?% (pre-press) ( Kemper, 2005 ).
- Is rapeseed defatting suitable for direct solvent extraction?
- Due to its high oil content of up to 50 % in the seed, rapeseed defatting is not suitable for direct solvent extraction ( Unger, 2011 ). Conventionally, oil extraction from rapeseed is achieved by screw-pressing, either by expeller pressing (full-pressing) or by pre-pressing of the seeds, followed by solvent extraction.
- What is rapeseed oil?
- Rapeseed oil third largest source of edible oil after soya bean oil and Palm Oil. Europe alone contributes six million tons to the world market. The seed is mechanically pressed or pressed to extract 50% to 75% of the Oil content in the seed before sending to solvent extraction to make the process more efficient.
- What chemical compounds are extracted from rapeseed?
- The list of chemical compounds obtained by different extraction technologies is given in Table 1. Extracted biologically active compounds from rapeseed ( Brassica napus L.). Solvents: methanol, ethanol, acetone, butanol, chloroform, hexane. Extraction time: 12 h at room temperature
