Ponding system or land application techniques are widely used at industrial scale to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to discharge to the environment. POME is considered as one of the major problems that has generated voluminously from the palm oil industries. The main purpose of this article is to organize the scattered available information on various aspects and a wide range of ...

A typical size of an anaerobic pond in a palm oil mill which has a processing capacity of 54 tons per hour is 60.0 × 29.6 × 5.8 m (length × width × depth) (Yacob et al., 2006a) which is approximately equivalent to half the size of a soccer field. Size of pond depends on the capacity of the palm oil mill as well as the area available for ponds.

As shown in Table 5, palm oil mill B has the lowest ratio of VSS:TSS compared to palm oil mills A and C. The TSS concentration in the POME is dictated by the sampling point. For palm oil mills A and C, POME was collected after the decanter pond (Fig. 1 a and c) whereby some of the solids had settled down prior to further treatment. For palm oil ...

The extraction of crude palm oil (CPO) results in several by-products, both solid and liquid, such as empty fruit bunch (EFB), palm kernel shell (PKS), mesocarp fibre (MF), and palm oil mill effluent (POME). At 67%, POME is the most abundant by-product of the CPO production process. The negative effects of POME on the environment are real and ...
- How ponding system is used to treat palm oil mill effluent?
- Abstract: Ponding system or land application techniques are widely used at industrial scale to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to discharge to the environment. POME is considered as one of the major problems that has generated voluminously from the palm oil industries.
- Why do palm oil mills use ponds?
- Most palm oil mills are employing a series of anaerobic and aerobic ponds for POME treatment, in order to comply with environmental regulation. In recent years, some mills are installed with biogas capture facilities in order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas, as well as to raise some profits.
- Do palm oil mills have a discharge pond?
- In practise, most palm oil mills will have a discharge pond to absorb this slight fluctuation, before the final effluent is discharged to the environment. Fig. 9. COD values of discharge effluent versus POME inlet. Fig. 10. BOD values of discharge effluent versus POME inlet. 5. Conclusion
- What is palm oil mill effluent (POME)?
- Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) may differ. The overall characteristics of raw POME and the regulatory discharge limits are presented Table 1. POME is produced from various processing units in an oil mill industry blowing down, tank and decanters. The four primary stages categorized by Sethupathi
