Refined palm kernel oil is used for human consumption or for use in technical applications such as soaps and candles manufacture, food industry, oleo?chemical industry [6]. The PFAD, as palm fatty acid distillate, is commonly used in producing soap, animal feed, plastics and other intermediate products for the oleo?chemical industry [7].
- How is palm oil reprocessed?
- The first step of crude palm oil and palm kernel oil physical refining is the degumming, which consists of the removal of the phosphatides. When this content is low, as is the case for these oils, the dry degumming is the common way.
- Why is palm kernel oil better than crude oil?
- Due to high acidity and relatively low phosphatide content, palm and palm kernel oil are generally physically refined, which is preferred to the chemical process. The quality of the crude oils has to be considered as it can greatly affect the efficiency of the refining process.
- How is palm oil processed?
- There are two major processing methods known as chemical and physical refining. Palm oil is by far the most important fractionated oil in the world; crude, semi- and fully refined palm oil can be fractionated in multi-stage, giving access to several products for specific applications.
- What is chemical refining of palm oil?
- When starting with very good quality crude palm oil (low FFA and high DOBI), chemical refining is able to purify the oil so effectively that the bleaching step can be skipped or performed with very small amounts of non-activated bleaching earths or with silica.
