Abstract. A minimal residual oil content in the meal coming out of the hexane extractor is a clear benefit for a crushing plant; the more oil yield the better revenue for the crusher. In a modern and efficient extraction plant, a residual oil content ≤ 0.5% for soybean meal is expected.

In the past, crushing was done between mill stones that later became steel rolls. Hence the factories are known as oil mills and the process as oil milling or oilseed crushing. Seeds with a high oil content, like rape seed and sunflower seed, are usually mechanically pressed in expellers after a preheating step in indirectly heated conditioners.

Seed preparation and pretreating. Processing methods and equipment. Generally, processors can recover about 18% of the oil from soybeans by weight, while producing around 75-80% soybean meal. Using these percentages, the basic crush margin formula for soybeans would be: (oil price x 0.18) + (meal price x 0.80) – oilseed cost = crush margin.
- How is crude oil produced in a soybean crushing plant?
- The crude oil is usually water degummed in the crushing plant which generates an additional flow, consisting of gums (or lecithin). Table 1 presents the main quality parameters (optimal contents) of the major products from soybean crushing.
- Does canola degradation occur in oil mills?
- Campbell and Slominski (1990) studied the degradation of canola during processing in two different oil mills. The first one was processing seeds comprising almost three times more alkyls than indols while for the second mill, the two families were almost at par.
- How is oil extracted from seeds?
- Seeds containing high amount of oil (like sunflower or rapeseed) are generally first mechanically pressed to extract a portion of crude oil (pre-pressing); the press cake is then subjected to solvent extraction. In some cases (rapeseed), the full pressing is an option.
