2.3 Treatment of acidic sludge. After acid treatment, the recovered base oil is separated from the mixture leaving dense sludge at the bottom of the beaker. This acidic sludge was treated by ethyl alcohol washing to react with the excess soluble acid in the mixture. Excess amount of ethyl alcohol was used for neutralization.

The common sources of oil sludges are the bottom of crude oil tanks, oil-water separators, desalinators, and oil wastewater treatment plants (Hu et al., 2013; Egazar'yants et al., 2015). In addition, oil sludge can be formed from waste engine oils from vehicles and machines ( Lam et al., 2012 ).
