- The process is non-toxic and does not involve mineral acids. Extraction of furfural from the reaction medium is performed using toluene-based liquid-liquid extraction in which furfural has good solubility in it. Initial techno-economic analysis indicated that the process is cost-effective, with an IRR of 15.7% at a furfural price of USD 1200/ton.
