Papaya seeds account for about 20% of the total fresh fruit weight. The seeds are generally discarded as agricultural waste products during fruit processing despite being edible. The seeds contain high levels of lipid and thus can be a new source of edible oil. Numerous technologies have been used for extraction of crude oil from papaya seeds.

The physicochemical properties of Jatropha seed oil from 9 geographical origins and 24 candidate plus plants (CPPs) were evaluated. The yield of seed oil obtained by Soxhlet extraction using n-hexane as solvent varied from 40.0% (Malaysia) to 48.4% (Vietnam) among seeds from different origins and 32.1% (CPP-17) to 48.8% (CPP-01) (w/w) among CPPs.
- What are the methods of oil extraction from oil seeds?
- Conclusions Oil extraction methods from oil seeds include conventional methods (solvent and mechanical extraction) and nonconventional or improved techniques (supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound, microwave, and enzyme assisted extraction.
- How is C inophyllum seeds oil extracted?
- In this study, C. inophyllum seeds oil was extracted using an ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) technique. The optimization of extraction parameters namely different types of solvent, extraction time, ultrasonic power, extraction temperature and liquid to solid (L/S) ratio were performed using one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method.
- Which methods are used in vegetable oil extraction?
- From the preceding analysis, it is observed that recent research on vegetable oil extractions has been focused more on the assisted methods (microwave and ultrasound) and supercritical fluid extraction compared to the conventional solvent and mechanical extraction methods.
- Why is plant oil extraction important?
- Extraction through these novel industrial techniques is helpful for the oxidative stability of plant oils and provides better yield than traditional methods. The oil extract from seeds is used to develop different functional foods. Plants-oil is more valuable and cost-effective.
