Planting and Cultivation: In this stage, palm trees are planted and cultivated to produce fresh fruit bunches, which will be harvested and processed into palm oil. This stage involves preparing the land, selecting the right palm variety, planting the trees, and providing the necessary care and maintenance to ensure healthy growth.

4.1 Mechanical extraction. Pounding (digestion) and oil extraction are the most tedious and essential operations in traditional palm fruit processing; therefore early efforts concentrated on these tasks. In small-scale processing, digestion, the breaking up of the oil-bearing cells of the palm fruit’s mesocarp, is the most labour intensive.

A phenolic, Palm Fruit Bioactive complex (PFBc) derived from the extraction process of palm oil from oil palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis), is reported to offset inflammation due to its high antioxidant, especially vitamin E, and polyphenol content. The benefit is thought to be achieved via the influence of antioxidants on gene expression.
- How is palm oil extracted?
- The extraction of palm oil from oil palm fruits is practiced in many countries in Africa. The technologies for these processes are, in most cases, either still traditional or very modern. Traditional technologies usually have the advantage of requiring low investments, but are labour-intensive, inefficient and time-consuming.
- How are carotenoids extracted from crude palm oil?
- A number of methods have been developed to recover and extract carotenoids from crude palm oil including solvent extraction, adsorption, precipitation and transesterification-distillation. However, to-date, only transesterification-distillation and transesterification-solvent extraction have been scaled-up to industrial practise.
- Can palm oil be extracted using SFE technology?
- The extraction of palm oil using SFE technology is envisioned to have a great outlook (Bharat, 2003). However, extraction of palm oil from its fruits using SC-CO2 has been found to be relatively rare as compared to the application of SFE on other vegetable oils (Bisunadan, 1993 and Lau et al., 2006).
- What are the processing steps of oil palm fruit?
- The processing steps of oil palm fruit can be broken into a few steps: bunch reception, fruit sterilization, fruit digestion, pulp extraction, and oil (Fig. 1) . Bunch reception involves grading the oil palm fruit and the threshing process, removing fruit from the 20) bunches19, .
