For solvent extraction (Soxhlet using n-hexane), we establish that the yield of castor oil ranges from 43% to 53% depending on the origin and variety of castor seeds. The physico-chemical parameters of the castor oil are determined using standard methods and most of them are within the ASTM values and those reported elsewhere.

Castor Oil Extraction. Castor oil seed contains about 30%–50% oil (m/m).74,75 Castor oil can be extracted from castor beans by either mechanical pressing, solvent extraction, or a combination of pressing and extraction.74 After harvesting, the seeds are allowed to dry so that the seed hull will split open, releasing the seed inside. The ...

- How is castor seed extracted?
- Castor seed of unknown varieties is acquired in different regions of production in Brazil, transported, and stored in plastic bags for a period of up to 12 months. Before entering in the process of oil extraction, the seed is cleaned with shaking sieves and air blowing for excluding contaminants like sand, stones, wood,
- Where does castor oil come from?
- In the industrial process of castor most of the oil is extracted from the seed in the expeller press. Castor seed entering in the industry has approximately 48% of oil content (Severino et al., 2015), and the castor cake sampled just after the expeller press had the oil content reduced to 10.96%?±?1.93 (Table 2).
- What is castor oil refining?
- Refining of castor oil includes degumming, neutralization, de-waxing, deodorization and bleaching. Castor oil has one double bond in each fatty acid chain and is classified as non-drying oil. Like all other vegetable oils, it has different physical and chemical properties that vary with the method of extraction .
- How are castor beans extracted?
- extracted from castor beans by either mechanical pressing or solvent extraction or combination of the two. In mechanical pressing, the seeds are crushed and then adjusted to low moisture content by warming in a steam-jacketed vessel. Then, the crushed seeds are loaded into a hydraulic press and pressed by mechanical means to extract oil.
