Corn oil. Corn oil (North American) or maize oil (British) is oil extracted from the germ of corn ( maize ). Its main use is in cooking, where its high smoke point makes refined corn oil a valuable frying oil. It is also a key ingredient in some margarines. Corn oil is generally less expensive than most other types of vegetable oils .

an energy reserve. Oil is stored in the germ located in the kernel, at a concentration of approximately 4% by dry weight (Moreau et al., 2009). At a standard shelled-corn-bushel weight of 56 lb, the theoretical DCO yield potential is approximately 1.9 lb/bu. In other words, 1.9 lbs of corn oil are present in every 1 bushel of corn. With ...

Oil is being pressed from the germ using a heated screw press, which can yield as much as 50 percent of the germ oil. Then the pressed oil should be extracted in the corn oil extraction plant, the remaining oil is stripped from the "press cake" with the solvent hexane, a volatile by-product of gasoline production.
- How is corn oil extracted?
- Almost all corn oil is expeller-pressed, then solvent-extracted using hexane or 2-methylpentane (isohexane). The solvent is evaporated from the corn oil, recovered, and re-used. After extraction, the corn oil is then refined by degumming and/or alkali treatment, both of which remove phosphatides.
- Where does corn oil come from?
- Corn oil, as you might have guessed, is sourced from corn kernels, canola oil comes from the rapeseed plant, and vegetable oils can contain an array of plant-based components. How we extract oil from these ingredients affects the characteristics of and best uses for corn, canola, and vegetable oils. What Is Corn Oil?
- How corn oil is extracted during ethanol production?
- In order to understand the corn oil extraction process and how corn oil is extracted during ethanol production, it helps to first understand how corn is processed. Broadly speaking, corn processing is broken up into wet milling and dry milling. Wet milling is primarily used to make food ingredients: sweeteners, starch, corn oil, and so on.
- How is corn germ extracted?
- The corn germ is dried in a kiln, and the oil is extracted by either a hydraulic or a screw press; the pressed cake is further treated by washing it with a solvent, ordinarily hexane, and the dissolved oil is recovered by evaporating the solvent.
