Processing dry copra through expellers generally offers about 60% yield (as high as 70%) of coconut oil based of dry weight. About 30 to 40% is oil cake. Typically, one thousand mature coconuts weigh about 1440 kg and yield about 170 kg of copra from which around 70 lit of coconut oil can be extracted.

A hammer mill (or two) to grind the copra chunks into roughly half-inch pieces (10-12 mm). A cracking mill to break these pieces down to about one-eighth of an inch (3 mm). A flaking mill that rolls the material to 1/32” or less than one millimeter thick. After grinding, cracking, and flaking, copra can be pressed like other oilseeds to ...

The pre-pressed cake is sent to the oil pressing machine and pressed again to reduce the residual oil in the cake to the minimum. The copra oil press adopted has high production efficiency and is easy to operate and maintain. The residual oil rate in the cake after twice pressing is around 5-8%. 6. Crude Copra Oil Filtration

Indirect drying kilns produce excellent copra. Various preparatory equipment may be used satisfactorily. A new copra oil mill will be most economically designed for handling copra as the main raw material. If, however, an existing oil mill is to diversify to include copra as new raw material, only minor equipment changes are needed.
- How is copra oil made?
- Copra oil is pressed from dried coconut meat. Harvesting coconuts for copra is a labor-intensive process. Farmers and plantation workers manually remove the fibrous outer husk, then split open the coconut shell to drain the liquid.
- What is the moisture content of copra?
- Moisture content of copra is about 3 percent when it leaves the conditioner. Oil extraction: In the expeller, the milled copra is subjected to high-pressure oil extraction. The temperature of the oil should be kept at about 93-102oC (200-215oF) to produce light coloured oil and effect good extraction.
- How is copra oil filtered?
- Two filter presses are provided – one on duty while the other is being cleaned and dressed. Maximum filtering pressures reach about 60 psi. The filtered oil flows into a surge tank from where it is finally pumped to the coconut oil storage tank. Coconut oil produced from good quality copra is clear, low in fatty acid and has good coconut aroma.
- How is copra processed?
- Harvesting: The first step in copra processing is the harvesting of mature coconuts. Coconuts are ready for harvest when they are fully ripe and have turned brown. The process involves climbing the coconut tree and cutting the fruit from the tree. This can be done manually or with the use of equipment such as a long pole with a blade or a ladder.
