The result: two end products, oil and the leftover solids traditionally called meal. The two most common methods for separating the oil from the oilseed are chemical extraction and mechanical extraction. With chemical extraction, there is less oil loss, but plants incur higher investment costs while yielding a lower value product.

The solvent extraction of vegetable oils like soybean oil dominates the oilseed industry as the most popular extraction method used around the world. Most large-scale solvent plants use hexane extraction to chemically separate oilseeds into liquid fat and solid protein—popular ingredients in the food industry and many other market sectors.

Rubber seeds are a by-product of rubber production and are rich in oil and protein. Upgrading of rubber seeds to produce proteins, oils and feedstock can generate additional revenue for rubber production and reduce waste. The present study investigates the effects of different pre-treatments and extraction methods to determine the optimal methods to produce oil and protein from rubber seed ...
- What are the methods used to extract essential oil from plants?
- The methods used to extract essential oil from these plants are; steam distillation (SD), solvent-assisted extraction, hydro distillation (HD), ultrasonic-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction and solvent-free microwave extraction ( Belhachat et al., 2018 ). Oil extraction techniques are classified as shown in Fig. 1.
- How efficient is oil extraction from rubber seed kernels?
- Our study revealed that the efficiency of extracting oil and protein from rubber seed kernels varies significantly depending on the pre-treatment and extraction methods. For screw pressing, high operating temperatures increase the release of oil by breaking the cell structure and lowering the oil viscosity.
- Can rubber seed protein be extracted?
- Studies on rubber seed protein extraction are limited. Widyarani et al. ( 2014) reported a maximum protein recovery of 71% obtained by alkaline extraction and assessed a one-step combined oil and protein extraction using an aqueous enzymatic method, which produced a protein recovery of 67% and a lower oil recovery of 34%.
- Can supercritical carbon dioxide extraction be used to separate rubber seed oil?
- Lee et al. ( 2013) demonstrated that supercritical carbon dioxide extraction can be used to separate rubber seed oil, but the equipment is expensive and the oil recovery is relatively low, so it is not suitable for industrial production. Studies on rubber seed protein extraction are limited.
