There are two types of methods to extract the oil from the seeds, namely solvent extraction and pressing. Solvent extraction is suitable for the seeds with oil content lower than 20%, such as soybean. Pressing is suitable for the seeds with high oil content, such as rapeseed. However, there is residual oil in the meal by using the pressing method.

The conventional technology used for oil extraction from oilseeds is by solvent extraction. In solvent extraction, n -hexane is used as a solvent for its attributes such as simple recovery, non-polar nature, low latent heat of vaporization (330 kJ/kg) and high selectivity to solvents. However, usage of hexane as a solvent has lead to several ...

Rapeseed oil third largest source of edible oil after soya bean oil and Palm Oil. Europe alone contributes six million tons to the world market. The seed is mechanically pressed or pressed to extract 50% to 75% of the Oil content in the seed before sending to solvent extraction to make the process more efficient.

Conventionally, oil extraction from rapeseed is achieved by screw-pressing, either by expeller pressing (full-pressing) or by pre-pressing of the seeds, followed by solvent extraction. Oil contents in the resulting press cakes are in the range of 5 %–10 % (full-press) or 15 %–18 % (pre-press) (Kemper, 2005).

- Is rapeseed defatting suitable for direct solvent extraction?
- Due to its high oil content of up to 50 % in the seed, rapeseed defatting is not suitable for direct solvent extraction ( Unger, 2011 ). Conventionally, oil extraction from rapeseed is achieved by screw-pressing, either by expeller pressing (full-pressing) or by pre-pressing of the seeds, followed by solvent extraction.
- Can rapeseed oil be extracted from water ethanol & ethyl acetate?
- The use of solvent mixtures such as water/ethanol/ethyl acetate was investigated for the extraction of rapeseed oil, obtaining the maximum rate of oil yield (32.35 mg/mm) with the mixture containing 9.17%, 6.61% and 84.17% of water, ethanol and ethyl acetate, respectively [ 107 ].
- Where is rapeseed produced?
- Crops with yellow flowers are known as rapeseed ( B. napus) in European countries and are called canola in the United States. They are produced in various countries including Europe, Canada, China, India, Russia, Turkey, and northern areas of Pakistan . Rapeseed oil contributes 20% in overall oil production worldwide .
